As visual creatures, we have a longstanding relationship with light, the medium that reveals the world around us. Simply, it allows us to see.

Daylight, though free for the taking, is available only during (you guessed it) the day, and it can be as ephemeral and ever-changing as the clouds in the sky. Electric light is much more predictable, but putting this light to use requires effective capture, control, and delivery techniques. Once harnessed by modern luminaires, we are able to use light to expand our tasks and customize the spaces we live in.

However, a preoccupation with function would relegate good lighting to the realm of distributions and illuminance levels that produce good visibility. Human experience shows us that there is something more. With our senses come thought, association and emotion – all part of the many wonders of light.

Once you have memorized every single word of this module, you are invited to take a QUIZ (don’t worry – it’s optional). If you pass the QUIZ, you will receive a Certificate of Completion. Not quite the same as a Ph.D. in Lighting, but, hey, it’s free!

For those of you that have read this module already, this is a new feature. Think you can pass without a review? The passing grade is 99% (just kidding! – it’s 80% based on 15 questions).

Navigation Arrows

Navigation
The menu buttons on the left side of your screen will allow you to directly access the first page of each section. The red navigation arrows at the bottom of each page will allow you to proceed forward or backward through the pages. Some pages will be longer than others, so you may need to scroll down the page to see all of the content and find the navigation arrows.

Pop-Up Windows
You'll also see linked text and "click here" graphics sprinkled throughout the sections -- this is an invitation for you to use your mouse to poke around and learn more about the topic at hand in separate popup windows. To keep you on your toes, you'll also see pop-up quiz questions from time to time. Hey, you're not being graded here -- so have fun!
