Grants and Scholarships

Howard Brandston Student Lighting Design Education Grant
The Howard Brandston Student Lighting Design Education Grant was established to encourage and recognize students who have demonstrated exceptional professional promise through the presentation of an original and ingenious solution to a supplied design problem.

Besal Fund
The Besal Lighting Education Fund has awarded over $500,000 in scholarships to students from accredited schools throughout the United States. Established in honor of the late Robert J. Besal, whose career of more than 30 years in the lighting industry exemplified the high standards of knowledge, professionalism and service – The Besal Fund aspires to encourage talented and committed students to pursue a career in the lighting industry.

Richard Kelly Grant
The Richard Kelly Grant was established by the New York Section of the Illuminating Engineering Society in 1980. Originally conceived as a scholarship program and later opened to young persons working in lighting in North America, the Grant is administered by the New York Section under the auspices of the IES.

Robert E. Thunen Memorial Scholarships
Applications for the Thunen Memorial Scholarship may be submitted by full-time students who desire to study illumination as a career. Applications for the Thunen Memorial Scholarship may be made by those who will be a junior, senior or graduate student in an accredited four year college or university located in Northern California, Nevada, Oregon or Washington (the late Mr. Thunen's business territory).

Sylvian R. Shemitz Memorial Scholarship
A scholarship in the amount of $2,500 will be awarded annually to one student who demonstrates creativity, vision and knowledge in the field of architectural lighting. This award honors the legacy of lighting pioneer and IES member Sylvan R. Shemitz, FIES. As founder of Sylvan R. Shemitz Designs, Inc., now known as The Lighting Quotient, Schemitz patented many major innovations in asymmetric lighting, including elliptipar and tambient, and invented the first single-source task/ambient lighting solution.

Young Professionals Scholarship Fund (students and new professionals)
The IES Young Professionals Scholarship Fund supports the attendance of students and emerging professionals at the IES Annual Conference.

IES Emerging Professional Sponsorship
Each year, IES sections and corporate sponsors step up to provide funds to support the attendance of emerging professionals (EPs) —which includes students and early career professionals—at the IES Annual Conference and the IES EP Workshop that precedes the conference. The number of awards will vary each year, depending on available sponsorships. IES EP Sponsorships will be awarded to undergraduate and graduate students and to EPs (individuals working in the lighting profession for five or fewer years.) The IES EP Sponsorship is intended to offset flight, lodging and IES Annual Conference registration expenses. IES membership is not a prerequisite for sponsorship.
