    This Recommended Practice, portions of which are based on troubleshooting guides originally developed by the interNational Association of Lighting Management Companies (NALMCO), examines common lighting maintenance procedures and the central components of an effective planned maintenance program.

    Specifically, it will:
    1. Describe typical lighting system behavior, identifying those light loss factors that can be addressed by maintenance.
    2. Discuss a recent study on luminaire dirt depreciation (LDD) that gives new recommendations on determining this factor and new information significant to the luminaire count required in contemporary designs.
    3. Detail the components of an effective program, including planning, operations, methods, materials, and troubleshooting.
    Following a brief introduction, there are eight main sections: light loss factors identifying recoverable and non-recoverable losses; impact of a new LDD study presenting the results of new research that challenges old assumptions; planned maintenance techniques identifying proactive methods for continuously attaining required illuminance levels; planning and economics balancing economic and performance concerns for group relamping; designing for maintenance constructing a lighting system that can be serviced without great difficulty; planning and executing maintenance operations understanding why door frame size, space usage, and OSHA rules all have an impact; disposition of failed lighting components (USA) conducting disposal and recycling of lighting hardware within current EPA requirements; and system troubleshooting presenting many common lighting failure modes and typical solutions in a convenient tabular form.
