The IES public policy activities are guided by directives in a previous version of the strategic plan:
- Position IES as an advocate for quality lighting among the public
- Position IES as an advocate for quality lighting among Governmental entities
- Position IES as the “Lighting Authority” for legislative and regulatory activity
- Establish active, working relationships with other industry organizations
The IES created the Manager of Governmental Affairs and Public Policy staff position to execute this plan. In this capacity, the Manager works with Federal and State governments, collaborates with other organizations, participates in coalitions, and communicates important issues to the IES Board and to the membership.
Public Policy communications channels include a bi-monthly column in the IES publication LD+A, a short monthly article for the LD+A “e-report”, a news page on the IES website, and presenting at local IES Section meetings throughout the year.
The Manager of Governmental Affairs and Public Policy works closely with the IES Standards department on code development and adoption and benefits from the IES’ Research activities which provide support for the various positions taken by the IES on market and industry issues.
The Manager also supports the Manager of Industry Relations in initiating and developing relationships with other organizations to provide lighting-related expertise to their committees and activities.
