A membrane lining the posterior part of the inside of the eye.  It comprises visual photoreceptors (cones and rods) that are sensitive to light, and nerve cells that transmit to the optic nerve the responses of the receptor elements.

A membrane lining the posterior part of the inside of the eye. It comprises visual photoreceptors (cones and rods) and non-visual photoreceptors (intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells) that are sensitive to light, and nerve cells that transmit signals via the optic nerve to various portions of the brain.
