A membrane lining the posterior part of the inside of the eye. It comprises visual photoreceptors (cones and rods) and non-visual photoreceptors (intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells) that are sensitive to light, and nerve cells that transmit signals via the optic nerve to various portions of the brain.
