THEATRE SYSTEMS DESIGN BASICS: The Future Is Now (1.00 LU)

Discusses criteria needed for designing a theatrical space and the programming needs of a typical educational performance space. This course discusses the requirements for all necessary entertainment lighting components as well as holistic requirements for the performance lighting system.

SPEAKER: Leonard Miller

Leonard Miller has been active in professional Entertainment Lighting for 35 years, starting as a graduate from Concordia University on Montreal, known as the unofficial birthplace of Cirque de Soleil where he worked as part of the creative team assembling the very first show back in 1984. After graduation he spent the next decade working as a freelance and touring technician supporting concerts, theatre, cruise ships and theme parks including project management for two back-to-back new-build cruise ships for Norwegian Cruise Lines in France, several years at Walt Disney World in Orlando and other positions with Royal Caribbean Cruise Line, Cunard cruise Line, Sea World and Universal Studios Orlando. In 1995 Leonard took a position with Paramount Parks in Charlotte NC as Construction Manager running a facility supporting the design and construction of all live shows and themed entertainment at the five Paramount theme parks in the US and Canada, and also held key roles in the restoration of the original Start Trek Enterprise bridge in support of the 25th anniversary tour that is now donated to the Smithsonian, and also with construction of the Star Trek The Experience attraction at the former Las Vegas Hilton, and work on several major motion pictures including James Cameron’s Titanic. In 2000, Leonard and his family relocated to Dallas TX when he worked for several special event companies before joining Vari-Lite in 2004 as a regional sales manager supporting the oldest and largest automated lighting manufacturer in the world, and by 2016 had worked his way up to international sales manager supporting global sale efforts. In 2016 he joined Lex Products, a leading manufacturer of entertainment electrical power distribution systems as their global VP of Sales. Unexpectedly by mid-2020 with the near halt of all live entertainment globally due to Covid, and the subsequent challenge to many manufacturers in the live entertainment industry, Leonard was required to make a change, fortunately he was able to join Bell & McCoy Lighting and Controls where he has been the Entertainment Lighting Specialist since Jan of 2021.
