Popcorn and a Movie Profiles in Lighting: Stanley McCandless
13 April 2022 | 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm EDT

The IESNYC History Committee spotlights the illustrious career of architect, designer, engineer, writer, professor, Stanley McCandless (1897-1967), a true lighting industry pioneer. McCandless is considered to be the father of modern lighting design. During his tenure at Yale University (1925-1964) teaching theatrical lighting, he published books on lighting design including A Method of Lighting the Stage (1932), his landmark book in which he describes, quantifies, and qualifies theatre lighting. Known as the McCandless Method, it is still taught and used to this day. He also straddled the divide between the worlds of manufacturing and design. As illumination consultant he used an ellipsoidal reflector in the house light fixtures he designed for the Center Theatre in Radio City. These units were the prototype for the “LeKo,” an ellipsoidal reflector spotlight he created for Chuck Levy and Ed Kook’s Century Lighting.
Drawing from the History Committee’s vast and expanding collection of recorded material, this video program is the first in a series that spotlights notable lighting industry professionals.
