WHAT
Quality lighting design has long been integral to an occupant’s health and well-being in a built environment, but lighting solutions incorporating disinfection by GUV might be integral to the next generation of sanitizing and disinfecting spaces.  UV-C is invisible light between 280-100 nanometers that is germicidal, killing/inactivating 99.9% of viruses, bacteria, fungi, and other pathogens.  The technology, currently ubiquitous in healthcare applications to cut down healthcare associated infections, will become a critical tool for more applications in our fight against emerging dangerous pathogens.  However, exposing UV-C light to occupants could be harmful to their health, so the technology must be used in a smart way.  This presentation discusses UV-C disinfecting light and similar products, the economic value of such solutions, some safety considerations for the product.  Finally, we will propose a set of best practices to automate disinfection during off hours, so employees, patrons, and other occupants have pieces of mind that they are in a disinfected environment.

Presentation is AIA Accredited for CEUs
LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  • Define Germicidal Ultraviolet radiation and get acquainted with the science
  • Demonstrate the commercial necessity and viability of UV-disinfecting solutions in the future built environment
  • Discover the technologies that harness UV radiation to disinfect areas and their benefits and potential risks.
  • Discuss next-generation automation strategies to ensure safe operation of these powerful technologies.
