For those that ‘winter’ in Antarctica, psychosis, suicide and depression have been common issues; so too have been records of circadian sleep disorders. This presentation shows the history and challenges of living in Antarctica, specifically at the British Halley Ice Shelf Research Station.
The speaker was responsible for the all the lighting design for Halley VI and for the interior habitats. This was informed by over 40-years of endocrinological medical data gathered from the previous stations. This talk will show the history and challenges of life at Halley and Antarctica, the research, the data analysis and the solutions for the lighting design that was installed to address historic medical issues on those that winter on the ice. Since the base has opened in late 2010, the speaker remained in touch with the doctors and staff, and over the years has seen how dramatically life at Halley is improved over that experienced in the previous versions.
The design of the station is also unique, with the architect and engineers needing to address not just cold, but issues such as ice-shelf movement, snow accumulation and severe winds. Also, the ability to be able to be relocated quickly in an emergency. Now, six years since the station became occupied, the story and solution for Halley VI has a resonance and provides lessons to all in the field of human centric lighting.
