Webinar: Night-time Vulnerability Assessment (NVA)

January 25, 2023 | 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm PST

FREE

Feeling unsafe when walking alone at night is a common issue for many people at night and just adding brighter lights does little to change the equation. Our clients and communities need urgent design responses for safety concerns that are beyond meeting minimal compliance based on the standards. As lighting designers we feel the necessity to be more objective and evidence based when we’re defining an urban context safe vs unsafe and include other layers that affect the safety perception of a night-time environment. Thanks to the research and collaboration initiative that our Melbourne team started, Night Time Vulnerability Assessment (NVA) – an evidence based methodology has been developed to measure the social, physical and atmospheric qualities that work together to affect perceptions of safety after dark.

The NVA brings together criminology, risk and resilience, urban design, architecture, lighting, advanced digital data collection and analysis of existing site conditions. The NVA is intended to sit alongside night time community engagement programs to better inform how light and the urban environment shapes perceptions of safety, embedding evidence based technical design solutions to meet community needs. Together with globalization strategy our Americas team has conducted further studies in five (5) different cities applying the NVA methodology, and a workshop involving other disciplines for a more comprehensive assessment strategy for future projects.
