IES Ottawa Section

In the face of a global pandemic, germicidal UV luminaires utilizing a UV-C technology offers a layer of disinfection against bacteria, viruses, and fungal spores. Air and surface disinfection can play an important role in a broad range of applications, such as schools, offices, industry, (food) retail and museums.

UV-C lamps operating at a certain nanometer range have proven to be highly effective at inactivating viruses, bacteria and mold spores. However, humans and animals should not be exposed to germicidal UV-C light at certain wavelengths as it can cause damage to their skin and eyes. Subsequently it is paramount that UV-C products are built with safety in mind.

This presentation will review the products, applications, and regulatory requirements for safe and effective deployment of UV-C disinfection strategies.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  • In the current global situation, questions surrounding sanitation, germicidal properties, and UV devices are more in focus than ever before.
  • Although UV-C light has been around for many years as a proven technology in the fight against viruses and bacteria, further information and education of business professionals is needed to facilitate the installation and use of this technology in a safe and effective manner.
  • Safety considerations around the use of UV lighting and radiation are critical when so many new products are entering the markets of lighting. Remember that safety certifications address risks like electric shock, fire and personal injury (photobiological safety) but safety certifications do not address efficacy claims. In Canada, the PMRA is responsible for product registration verifying the claimed efficacy claims.
  • Join this webinar to understand how this disinfection method could be useful to your business and to mankind and about mandatory certification and regulation. The webinar will provide a brief overview of the UV-C technology, demonstrate the steps for assessing and applying UV-C as a solution in commercial environment, and provide an example of UV-C implemented applications in practice.
