Please join us for an informative discussion between a panel of Wellness experts presenting short case studies outlining their experience utilizing Circadian Stimulus (CS) and Equivalent Melanopic Lux (EML) – wellness calculations in architectural lighting design projects. The panel will discuss how they approached Wellness lighting projects, followed by an open discussion, and audience Q&A. Attendees are encouraged to submit related questions during this live webinar!

Michiru Tanaka, Michiru Tanaka Lighting Design
Growing up in Tokyo, Michiru Tanaka was inspired by the subtle power lighting had over the urban environment. Michiru leverages her 18 years working in architectural lighting design with her teaching at the New York Fashion Institute of Technology and Pratt Institute to find a balance between pragmatic and forward leaning. Her research and design consulting projects for lighting technology companies have established her as a leader in burgeoning, sustainable technology. Michiru’s passion is to celebrate the intangibility of lighting driven bio-function and wellness, pioneered by her team of health scientists and doctors, with beautifully designed environments.

 

PANELISTS

Robert Soler, BIOS Lighting
Robert Soler is the Vice President of Human Biological Technologies and Research at BIOS Lighting. Prior to his work at BIOS, his most prominent work was at Kennedy Space Center, where he was the Subject Matter Expert for NASA’s circadian lighting system to synchronize astronauts to a 24-hour cycle on board International Space Station. He is a fellow of the National Science Foundation (NSF) and currently serves on the light advisory committee for the International WELL Building Standard.

Natalia Lesniak, Lumen Architecture
Architectural lighting designer Natalia Lesniak is a multidisciplinary practitioner with a background and education in the arts and sciences, from the Cooper Union School of Art and the Lighting Research Center at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. She has worked on experiments and research that focus on the impact of light on circadian rhythms, cognitive performance, and the development of research based light therapy and design strategies. As a designer she works on a range of residential, office, hospitality, retail, and other commercial projects. She advises on the application of circadian research and the WELL Building Standard in architectural lighting.

Dawn Brown, EXP Services Inc.
Dawn Brown is a Senior Lighting Designer with EXP Services Inc. and leads the Lighting Design effort out of Hamilton, Ontario CANADA. She has been in the industry for 20 years, practicing Lighting Design for 16 years. During this time Dawn has gained valuable project experience within a wide variety of sectors. Her most recent accomplishment is the United Technologies Center for Intelligent Buildings completed in 2018, in Palm Beach Gardens Florida. This project achieved LEED Platinum Certification and was recognized for two IES Awards of Merit; Energy & Environmental Lighting Design and Lighting Controls Innovation.

Dawn’s design philosophy is: ‘It takes a village’ in that the best solutions are always the result of a group effort. Collaboration is one of the aspects of her profession she enjoys most. The other is the idea that with lighting we can make the world a better place for people to live; Whether it be in the form of entertainment or health & wellbeing. Since 2017, she has been focused on lighting design for Long Term Care with her most recent project targeting WELL Certification. In her designs, Dawn utilizes both the WELL Buildings EML metric as well as the Lighting Research Center’s CS metric in order to achieve a healthy lighting environment for both daytime and nighttime activities.

Lisa Bartlett, Davis Partnership
With over 20 years of experience, Lisa Bartlett is an award-winning architectural lighting designer passionate about creating spaces that support wellness. She has guided lighting projects as diverse as large hospitals, corporate offices, and civic institutions to successful completion around the country.
As a recognized thought leader in the lighting industry, Lisa is known for bridging the gap between research and design. By utilizing evidence demonstrating the impact of light on human health, she executes innovative lighting solutions that support wellness.

Although Lisa focuses her efforts on lighting design, she is also a licensed architect, nationally certified interior designer, EDAC-certified, and LEED-accredited professional, as well as a professional member of the International Association of Lighting Designers. She has delivered presentations on lighting and health for IESNA, LightFair, and Environments for Aging, is part of National Institutes of Health’s Health in Buildings Roundtable, and was recently featured in the film LD2020: A Story About Lighting Design.
