- Awareness of how the International Commission on Illumination (CIE) fits into the world of lighting
- Awareness of the process in which CIE recommendations and standards are developed
- Awareness of how research fits into guidance development (illustrated with a Canadian example – lighting for light-sensitive people)
- Awareness of how Canadian lighting experts of all kinds can be connected to and engaged with the CIE
The International Commission on Illumination (known by its French initials as the CIE) is home to the global community of light and lighting experts, providing a forum for open discussion and interchange on scientific fundamentals such as vision, colour, the metrology of optical radiation, photobiology, and photochemistry, as well as on lighting applications indoors, outdoors, and in image technology. It is recognized by the CIPM as the authority on the action spectra to describe biological responses to optical radiation, and by the ISO and IEC as the source of international standards within its scope. CIE members are national committees formed by the lighting communities in their countries, and Canada has had a Canadian National Committee of the CIE (CNC/CIE) for over 65 years. Join us to hear more about the activities of the CIE (including how they differ from IES activities), and how and why you should become involved in the work of the CIE. You’ll also see some recent research highlights from the NRC’s work on making office lighting suitable for a diverse population, and how our research makes its way into recommendations and standards.
Jennifer A. Veitch, Ph.D., FIES | Vice-President Technical and President-Elect of the CIE
Dr. Jennifer Veitch is a psychological scientist with expertise in environmental psychology, and has been with the NRC since 1992. She investigates interactions of people and their physical environments, including lighting quality and light source effects on performance, mood, and health. Her research is published in scientific journals and also influences recommendations and standards through the International Commission on Illumination (CIE), the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), and the Illuminating Engineering Society (IES). Dr. Veitch is a Fellow of national and international associations in lighting and psychology. She received the Waldram Gold Pin for Applied Illuminating Engineering from the CIE in 2011 and the IES Medal Award in 2018. She serves the CIE as its Vice-President Technical and is the President-Elect of the CIE.
