“The Business of Beauty with Karim Rashid”

Are companies really interested in people and culture? Do brands discuss personal rituals, warmth of family, regard for happiness, personal expression, wellbeing of human existence? And do they address these questions through the product they sell? Industrial speed has had a great effect on progress, communication, the global economy and on our human psyche. Yet our human experiences are becoming less apparent and products around us have taken on a banality and certain sameness due to rapid mass production, lack of research and development, lack of interest in a cultural significance, and low-capital investments due to the mass mechanization of the 20th century. Businesses can only be holistic if they are able to address these issues.
These ideas are the subject of an opening day session with Karim Rashid. Visionary and prolific, Rashid is one of the most unique voices in design today. With more than 4,000 designs in production, over 300 awards to his name and client work in over 40 countries, Rashid’s ability to transcend typology continues to make him a force among designers of his generation.

APPLICATION + EVIDENCE-BASED DESIGN
Thursday, October 28 | Human-Centered Lighting, Lighting Controls, and Evidence-Based Design
Ruth Taylor, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, will discuss lighting controls, specifically, how users experience the act of manipulating the controls (sliders, keypads, touchscreens, etc.). Using results from Next Generation Lighting Systems (NGLS) Living Lab in NYC, this presentation describes the rationale and methodology of observational research in lighting controls, as well as some of most pertinent findings related to the understanding and operating of today’s commercial lighting controls—notably those marketed as easy to set-up and use.
DESIGN TOOLS + TECHNIQUES
Wednesday, October 27 | Augmented Reality as a Tool for Lighting Design
Michael Immecke, immecke + immecke planungsbüro, will walk participants through a journey based on an exclusive private residence realized in India between 2019 and 2020 by Immecke and partners. Detailed from first sketches through to installation, the process used Augmented Reality (AR) to exchange ideas, create design prototypes and get final approval from the client. Participants will gain an understanding of how AR can fit into their own projects.
EXPERIENCING LIGHT
Thursday, October 28 | Why Window Views are Essential for Visual Quality
Lisa Heschong, Heschong Mahone, will explain design techniques to balance the brightness of windows while preserving view. She will also discuss the underlying functions of window views in supporting our circadian and cognitive well-being and address why we may currently be working with a backward concept of glare and visual quality when it comes to windows and daylight.
ART + INSPIRATION
Thursday, October 28 | Cultivating Creativity
Andrea Hartranft, Hartranft Lighting Design, and Maureen Moran, MCLA, will examine the factors that contribute to unrestrained creativity, both in general and specific to lighting design. The speakers will discuss how we use knowledge and experience as a bridge to creativity, using participatory exercises to help attendees learn to approach design with a beginner’s mind.
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT + PRACTICE
Thursday, October 28 | Budgets and Lighting Design
Lighting design strategies can vary widely in terms of design and cost. Addie Smith, AE Design, will discuss designing a project with an understanding of the lighting budgets, which can give professionals an edge in turning your vision into reality. The presentation will also help attendees have a clearer idea of how a typical project budget is shaped, who can help advocate for your choices and how to make better decisions with lighting budgets in mind.
TECHNOLOGY
Thursday, October 28 | Control System Integration for Lighting and HVAC
Significant energy savings can be achieved by turning off HVAC when spaces are unoccupied, however, inadequate detailing and specifications, poor coordination between trades, and a siloed maintenance team are some of the short-comings that can torpedo the grand vision of an integrated system. Shoshanna Segal, Luminous Flux, LLC, and Lyn Gomes, DPR Construction, will share different perspectives on integration of these systems, outlining practical advice for four different techniques to successfully implement occupancy-based ventilation on your projects.

LightFair offers the world’s largest and most comprehensive annual lighting conference, featuring accredited courses over five days, including two days of in-depth pre-conference courses before the trade show and three days of conference courses during the trade show. All course registrations include free entrance to the LightFair exhibit hall.
In-person educational sessions will feature limited seating to accommodate social distancing and room capacity stipulations at the Javits Center, and guidelines recommended by the CDC, New York State and LightFair’s Safer Floor. Safer Show program.
