NYC Bridges and Tunnels to Be Dressed in LEDs

In New York City, a $27-billion capital plan known as the “New York Crossings Project” will focus on reconfiguring 10 bridges and tunnels to incorporate automatic tolling, enhanced security and resiliency measures, and public art displays. As part of the initiative, the New York Power Authority will begin installing LED lights on the structures in January. View the video of what’s planned:

Specifically, each redesigned toll plaza will feature a dawn-to-dusk color-changing light show dubbed “The City That Never Sleeps,” visible from miles away. As the toll plazas transform into “modern transportation gateways,” tunnel plaza walls will become “veils” that shield security equipment and double as LED message boards. Meanwhile, gantry structures for automated tolling will feature an artistic “wave” design constructed from chainmail fabric that moves with the wind.

New York Date Governor Andrew Cuomo, hopes the applications of these lights will become tourist attractions in and of themselves.
