When considering membership with the IES, there a variety of different individual membership types;

Member – $200 – Applicants for admission or transfer to Member may qualify under one of the following provisions. A Member shall:

  1. be a graduate from a four-year, or longer, accredited college curriculum related to the science or art of illumination and shall have been for at least five (5) years actively engaged in a professional or other similar capacity in the practice or teaching of illumination, or in other directly related fields or activities;
  2. be a graduate from a four-year, or longer, accredited college curriculum related to the science or art of illumination and shall have made some valuable contribution to the science or art of illuminating engineering or to its literature;
  3. have been for at least ten (10) years actively engaged in the practice or teaching of illumination, or in other directly related fields or activities, five (5) years of which shall have been in a professional or other similar capacity; or
  4. have made some exceptionally valuable contribution to the science or art of illuminating engineering or to its literature.

An applicant holding the LC shall be required to present only four (4) years of activity under (a) above and shall be required to present only eight (8) years of activity under (c) above.

A Member shall be entitled to all current privileges and benefits of the Society.

Associate – $200 – Applicants for admission or transfer to Associate shall be interested in the mission of the Society and shall be at least eighteen (18) years of age. Associates shall be entitled to all current privileges and benefits of the Society, but shall not serve on the Board or as a Committee Chair.

Subscribing – $600 (first year) and $400 (each subsequent renewal years) – A Subscribing membership can be added to an individual’s Member or Associate member type. Subscribing Members and Subscribing Associates are entitled to their respective membership benefits as described above, but in addition are subscribed to the IES Lighting Library. In their first year of membership, those that are subscribers receive a complete set of the entire IES Lighting Library delivered electronically or in hardcopy. Each subsequent year, subscribers will be provided, at no additional cost, any new or updated documents from the IES Lighting Library.

Emerging Professional (EP) – $95 – An Emerging Professional is an individual who is employed in the lighting industry but has less than 5 years of experience in the lighting industry. EPs shall be entitled to all current privileges and benefits of the Society, but shall not serve on the Board or as a Committee Chair.

Student – $25 – Shall be registered in a college or university for study toward a degree in an engineering, science, fine arts, architecture, interior design or other field, or, enrolled in an accredited two-year technical school, whose curriculum is related to illumination. Students shall have the privilege of participating in committee meetings, but shall not have the right to vote or to hold elective office except in a Student Chapter. Students also are entitled to all benefits of the Society unless specified.
