The new generation of students and young professionals demand personal contact with senior members of the industry. This form of relationship provides opportunities for effective feedback and two-way communication. To promote the development of students and emerging professionals, a mentoring program is now established. The IES Mentoring Program shall provide industry newcomers with access to experienced professionals who can assist with lighting industry knowledge and career development, independent of present employers, supervisors, or professors.
Mentoring is derived from a Greek word meaning enduring. Although mentoring is a common practice for professionals, a formalized mentoring program supports good intentions with solid structures and effective practices.
The program shall be structured to increase contact with emerging professionals and students and to provide one-on-one consultation opportunities for support, collaboration, and facilitation of career growth and strategic vision of the future of our Society and the industry.
Mentoring Program Organization
Mentors exist in all parts of the Society and individual mentors shall be available to mentees without regard to locale. Each District should strive to have mentors in various industry roles, for example, specifiers, manufacturers, manufacturers’ representatives, distributors, and contractors.
This one-to-one mentoring can be a: structured arrangement with time dedicated to meetings via conference calls or possible face-to-face meetings Society events. Social media is also acceptable if it fits your dynamic.
An ad hoc arrangement to allow mentors and mentees to communicate on an informal basis without specific time dedicated to meetings.
Eligibility Screening for Participants: Mentors
An IES Mentor shall:
- Be a person with a minimum of seven (7) years of experience in the lighting industry
- Commit to a two (2) year term of program participation
- Be accessible by both phone and Internet to answer questions about the lighting industry.
- Share ideas with the Membership Committee for program improvements and the creation of a resource pool for future mentors your committee person will assign you to your mentee.
An IES Mentee shall:
- Be a person with less than five (5) years of experience in the lighting industry
- Share ideas with the Mentoring Program Committee for program improvements.
- Strive to become a future mentor for the IES Mentoring Program.
IES mentees can be a valuable resource to the Society and their participation in the program will provide important feedback and information for the future strategic planning activities of the Society.
The Mentor / Mentee Relationship Disclaimer
This program is designed for professional growth, and as such, boundaries need to be adhered to. This will ensure the integrity of the mentoring program. It is not acceptable to share proprietary or sensitive information at any time. We are members of a professional society, and we should speak and act as such. Personal challenges not related to work and the IES should be left to other professionals, such as counselors, family members, clergy, etc. It is appropriate for unscheduled phone calls and emails as needed, but these should only occur between 7:00 AM and 8:00 PM. The mentor / mentee relationship is one where the mentor is given a position of trust and therefore romantic relationships are discouraged. If your mentoring pairing is not working out, please contact IES Membership services, and/or your Membership Committee person to ask to be discontinued with your current mentoring pairing.
IES will not assume any legal liability issues or legal proceedings that arise from this program. The participant will hold IES harmless from any damages that occur. The participant acknowledges that IES and their directors, officers, representatives and agents are NOT responsible for errors, omissions, acts or failures to act on any part of conducting activities on behalf of IES. Anyone participating in the program does so voluntarily, and should rely on their own independent judgment, in determining the exercise of reasonable care in any given circumstance.
