May 15, 2016 – A new energy bill, S.2012, the “Energy Policy Modernization Act of 2016,” passed in the U.S. Senate on April 20 by a vote of 85-12. The House version passed last December. Conferencing will now begin to merge the two into a final bill for presentation to the president for signature. The bill addresses energy efficiency in buildings, appliances, manufacturing, and housing, along with electric grid architecture, energy storage, expediting of liquid natural gas exports, loosening permitting rules for construction of natural gas pipelines on federal lands, providing subsidies for hydropower and geothermal, and permanently authorizing the Land and Water Conservation Fund.
