ANSI Approved
Approved American National StandardAs a larger segment of the US population ages, older adults will experience an increased loss of vision. The combination of poor vision and poor lighting can contribute to potentially life-threatening falls among the elderly. To compensate for vision loss, the living environment for seniors requires more light. Yet older adults can also be sensitive to factors such as glare. While designers and care providers must be cognizant of these special needs, energy conservation is also a consideration. To balance these and other factors, efficient design is essential. RP-28-07 discusses all of these issues as well as:

  • energy efficient light sources, task lighting, controls, and daylighting
  • applications to homes, apartments, condominiums, and congregate housing
  • the latest illuminance recommendations
  • photobiological effects of lighting (e.g., the circadian system, and vitamin D synthesis)
  • Numerous up-to-date color photographs, charts, and diagrams supplement the discussions.

Using ANSI/IES RP-28-16 is the best way that care providers and lighting designers can be assured they are creating optimum lighting while contributing to the safety and health of older adults in the built environment.
