A subjective measure based on the reddening of the skin; it depends on many variables, including individual sensitivity to UV, radiometric characteristics of the source, skin pigmentation, anatomic site, and the elapsed time between irradiation and the observation of reddening (typical value is for 24 hours post-exposure). MED is reserved solely for observational studies in humans and other animals. Unit: J/m2.
