[5.9.12] A visual response that occurs after the stimulus causing it has ceased. The effect is due to retinal photopigment regenerating from a bleaching. Afterimages can fade quickly because they are stabilized on the retina (the Troxler effect), but the reduction in sensitivity of the afterimage area continues until the photopigment has been regenerated.
