adaptation

[5.2] The process by which all or part of the retina becomes accustomed to more light or less light than it was exposed to during an immediately preceding period. It results in a change in the sensitivity to light. See also chromatic adaptation, scotopic vision, and photopic vision.

Note: The term adaptation is also used to refer to the final state of the process; for example, reaching a condition of adaptation to a specified level of luminance.
